Adding Framing to the Foundations

This level the Apprentice builds another 500+ words in the Blueprints along with new Building Codes® to illustrate various spelling rules and new Rule Tunes®. Using the words he has already built in Level One as tools for building sentences, he is introduced to Framing and Framing Codes®. This focuses on the grammar of English, learning the simple parts of speech and simple parts of a sentence, with new Grammar Tunes®.

The Apprentice reads aloud his first piece of literature, Little House in the Big Woods, as he learns how a great author paints pictures with words. He is introduced to various literary elements and composition basics all wrapped up in a 65-page literature notebook of his own writing and illustrations. Toward the end of this year, the Apprentice learns to connect his clean manuscript printing into a simple clear cursive writing.

    Plot Plan: 10 DVDs contain all video presentations by Barbara as she teaches all the Blueprints, Building Codes®, Framing Codes®, and Reading and Compositions study of Little House in the Big Woods. A detailed written Plot Plan provides the daily schedule for student viewing.

    Blueprints: These are the completed spelling list pages for the Foreman divided into daily lesson plans in a weekly format that act as answer keys to the work we do in the video presentations. All Rule Tunes® continue to be marked by a small musical note and sung throughout the presentations.

    Composition: The schedule of Apprentice Framing and Composition Copy Work at the beginning of this section allows the Foreman to choose whether to dictate all the words, phrases and sentences as presented on the videos OR, after the Apprentice views the examples on the videos, letting him copy the sentences and analyze them on his own. Following this written schedule are all the custom blank pages used for recording sentences that the Apprentice writes and analyzes.

    Reading and Composition Guide

    Little House in the Big Woods

    In this literature study the Apprentice begins to learn various literary elements such as character, plot, setting, similes and metaphors. He also practices alphabetizing, listing with commas and semi-colons, outlining, essay writing from an outline, paraphrasing, summarizing, and character comparisons.
